The WC+S Architectural team is made up of dedicated design professionals who have worked together for 15 +years, and is comprised of full time staff located on Salt Spring Island and dedicated contract staff located in Vancouver and Kelowna BC.  WC+S has benefited from an increasingly digitized and decentralized office structure that allows for a more mobile and agile workforce with the ability to service communities across BC, Canada, and the US.

patrick wheeler, Architect AIBC

CO-FOUNDER, PRESIDENT

After graduating first in class from the University of Toronto with a Masters of Architecture in 2005, Patrick moved to Vancouver to apprentice under some of the most highly regarded architects in the country. There he worked on a broad range of building typologies including single family residential,educational, community, recreation, multi-family residential, and health-care facilities. Patrick relocated to Salt Spring Island BC in 2015 to join Derek Crawford Architect, where he learned the art and technology of seniors housing. Since then, Patrick has served as design lead for hundreds of care units. As co-founder of WC+S Patrick aims to design cost effective buildings of enduring quality, and through the practice of architecture create meaning, beauty, and space for human connection 

 

CALLUM D. CRAWFORD, Lead Designer

CO-FOUNDER, DIRECTOR

After studying ecology at UBC, Callum went on to the New Media Institute in Victoria BC where he  studied digital design and development.  Following this he spent several years working as a freelance designer servicing high profile clients with a specialty in Construction and Developer content and founded Massive Scale Models in 1998.  Callum joined Derek Crawford Architect in 2001, and since this time he has worked on large scale projects in multiple sectors ranging from Health Care and Commercial buildings to High Rise Multi-family and high end Private Residences.  Over the past 17 years at DCA, he has cultivated a design specialty in Health Care with a focus on: Seniors Campus' of Care, Adult Acquired Brain Injury Units, Palliative Care, Mental health and Injury Rehabilitation. Callum has been a lead designer on over 3000 Care beds, and has a proven record of providing clients with effective master planning, facility design and clinical planning on numerous successful Public Private Partnership awards throughout BC and Canada. Callum is passionate about designing successful and sustainable built environments for clients and users, and does so with the same 'first principles' approach learned from apprenticing with his father in the family practice of DCA. 

 

DEREK CRAWFORD, Architect AIBC

SPECIAL CONSULTANT

Derek studied at Canterbury College of Architecture, UK, the University of Manitoba, Canada and the University of Washington, USA. Throughout his career, Derek has designed an impressive range of building typologies, working on innovative solutions to numerous projects throughout BC. Projects have been completed for private development groups as well as non-profit organizations, including a number of public/private partnerships. Derek Crawford Architect was established in 1998 with a focus on the use of wood frame technology in building design, and seniors housing, and is widely recognized as a leader in the field. DCA was also involved in urban planning, single family housing, and off shore hospitality projects.  In 2017 WC+S was established as a successor firm to DCA. Derek has stayed on as special consultant, where he brings his extensive experience, knowledge of clinical planning and architectural practice to the Design Team. Derek is a member of the Architectural Institute of BC and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and has practiced in the UK, USA and Canada.
